My heart stops when I see her face peering through the window of Top Shelf, nervously swinging her keyring around her index finger.

Jordan swoops over before I can, unlocking it to welcome Tasha in with a huge smile. I rush over to intervene. Who knows what might come out of her mouth after the conversation we just had.

“Hey, Starlight.” I step in front of the redhead with open arms, pulling her in for a quick hug. Nothing ostentatious.

“Hey.” Her eyes are dancing all over the store over my shoulder, taking in the sights.

“I’m glad you messaged me. I’d been thinking about calling you, but we’ve been so busy helping Jordan out here. Didn’t think you’d want to be dragged into all of this chaos.” Beau jumps on Dev’s back as if to prove my point.

“We’re finishing up here, anyway. Why don’t you two go on next door? You can get some dessert or something. It’s not like you were much help anyway, Jackson.” One red eyebrow is curved up as she looks down her nose at me, pointing to the hall leading over to the attached restaurant.

“You’re so welcome, Jordan. I’m glad you appreciated all my hard work.”

She laughs at the pretend annoyance on my face. “You know I love you, but decorating is clearly not your forte. I’ll be sure to invite you to help next time I need heavy boxes lifted, though. Gotta use of those muscles of yours.” Her smile is sweet and spicy, just like the rest of her.

Aspen swoops in behind her, arms encircling her waist as he leans in to whisper something in her ear. Her laugh is low, meant only for him, and I take that as my cue.

“Come on. Let’s leave these lovebirds behind.”

Her hand is smooth under mine as I drag her through the store, keeping to the front, since the guys are all crowded into the back, goofing off as usual.

“Have fun, Jacks!”

“Stay safe.”

My plan to sneak out is an epic fail. “Sorry.” I turn back to Tasha, but her shoulders are shaking with laughter.

The swinging door leads us into a darker space. The bookstore is lit to make the books look pretty, while the restaurant is dimmer to set the mood for an intimate conversation.

I lead her up to the wooden podium where the hostess stand is located, but I make a detour by the glass fronted case showing off all the beautiful sugary treats.

“Check those out and pick your favorite before we grab a table.” I turn to her anxiously. “That is, if you even want dessert.”

“Oh, I always want dessert.” Her eyes are locked on the treats and water wells in my mouth, but I don’t think it’s just the Death by Chocolate that has my mouth watering.

“Chocolate Brownie Bomb.” We both say at the same time.

Our words are in sync, like our bodies were the other night.

She purses her lips, eyeing the treat.

“Wanna share? It’s huge.” I ask her. I eat more than my share of chocolate and should probably not indulge in the entire confection all on my own.
